Scholarship Program

Each year, IAFF Local 45 provides two (2) $1,000 college scholarships, awarding a scholarship to a graduating senior from Newport High School and Newport Central Catholic High School.

Scholarship applications are available from the Guidance Staff at each high school. The schools also provide selection committees to evaluate the applications submitted from the other high school. Students seeking the award must complete an application which includes an essay about their current interests and future goals related to their college ambitions. Applicants must also submit two references.

The school selection committees recommend one applicant from each school to receive the award. The scholarship recipients are presented with their award in the spring during a City of Newport Commission Meeting.

Beyond the Call

Our "Beyond the Call" program provides assistance for needy families during the holiday season by providing their children with toys, clothing, and other essential needs such as diapers and formula.

Families are nominated by the Family Resource Centers at A.D. Owens and Fourth Street Elementary Schools. After contacting the parents for children's needs and clothing sizes, our members go shopping to buy for each child in the family. The gifts are wrapped and delivered on Christmas Eve by Santa himself on a Newport Fire Engine!

Needy families should contact their elementary school's Family Resource Center for more information.

Youth Sports

IAFF Local 45 sponsors many youth sports initiatives. The Newport Firefighters Youth Football, Newport Recreation Ponytail Softball, as well as athletic games and tournament advertisements for Newport schools. Every year, Local 45 sponsors the "Fireman's Bell Game," the high-school football game between Newport High School and Newport Central Catholic High School.
