NEWPORT, Ky. — Santa Claus was spotted in Newport a few hours ahead of schedule this Christmas Eve while participating in the Newport Fire Department’s “Beyond the Call” program.

St. Nick traveled via fire truck to six families’ homes. Newport Professional Firefighters Local 45 IAFF collected donations throughout the year to help purchase gifts and food for 22 children.

“Big smiles. These families may not smile throughout the year. When you see Santa Claus arrive on a fire truck with the lights on, we see smiles,” union president Jake Silvati said. “That helps us get through the tough year we’ve had to deal with, too.”

Shawnnika Giles and her four children were not expecting to have a Christmas celebration this year, but because of the community’s generosity, her kids will wake up and open gifts Christmas morning.

“This is…I can’t even explain it,” Giles said. “To wake up tomorrow for Christmas…I’m going to start crying…this is just more than enough, this is something I’ll never experience, this is a lifetime for the kids and me.”

Santa surprised the kids — even letting them open a few gifts, like a Spider-Man car.

If you would like to reserve a bottle you can Venmo @Newport-Firefighters. They are $40 each. They go on sale to the public on December 1st New Riff Distilling

Newport Firefighters Local 45 greatly need your help & support to keep our community children warm.

We are looking for new or (gentle used and laundered) coats, hats, gloves, and scarves for children ages 5 to 14, but we will gladly accept adult sizes as well.

We will also be accepting monetary donations at the drop off locations or you can VENMO to: @newport-firefighters for us to purchase the much need winter items for the community children.

Please have all donations dropped off by DECEMBER 3RD one of the locations on the flyer.
These winter items will be distributed to the children in Newport Primary School and Newport Intermediate School.

Please see the Flyer for Drop Off Locations! 🚒❄🚑❄

This year our shopping looked a little different. Our firefighter families gathered to shop for our “Beyond the Call” Program, all while staying safe, wearing our face mask, and sanitizing throughout our shopping adventure.
The firefighter’s “Beyond the Call” Program within our Community Outreach provides the children’s gifts (needs and wants) along with Christmas dinner and additional food for the week. Five (5) less fortunate families in Newport with twenty (20) children will be given a Merry Christmas with a very special delivery from Santa on Christmas Eve. Thank you Target Store Newport for your assistance and efforts in today’s shopping adventure!
A HUGE THANK YOU to our supporters, sponsors, donors, Newport Firefighter families, and everyone else that makes this all possible for us to give back to our community! While the pandemic has changed a lot of aspects of our lives, we do our very best to still find ways to safely give back to our community.
